With everyday use, door locks can start to show signs of wear and tear. While the average lifespan of a lock is seven years, there are lots of things you can do to get more out of your locks. Here is a list of simple tips from our team of locksmiths.
Hang your door properly
A lock only works properly if your door is properly installed and hung. A door that sags or binds places additional pressure on your lock’s latch and bolts, which can cause locks to fail and refuse to open. The gap between the door and the frame should be uniform across the top and sides.
Clean your lock the right way
Only use a mild detergent and warm water to clean the external surfaces of lock cases. Avoid getting water into the mechanism, as this can lead to internal rusting and don’t use abrasive or chemical cleaners. Before cleaning your lock, ensure you have read your manufacturer’s guide.
When it comes to lubrication, locksmiths recommend using graphite lubricants, Teflon or other dry lubricants. Avoid any petroleum-based products. Simply spray a small amount of the lubricants into the keyway and run the key in and out of the lock repeatedly, wiping any excess from your key as needed. This should be done at least once a year.
Duplicate keys from the original
When installing a new lock, maintain one of the original keys in the set and set it aside to make duplicates. As soon as keys shows signs of wear, replace it. While duplicates aren’t ever identical due to slight variances, by getting a locksmith to duplicate from an original, you can reduce these variances and ensure a good fit.
Check your dead bolts
Ensure that your dead bolts are aligned correctly. When your door is closed the dead bolt should operate freely, without you needing to lift, push or pulls the door. Also check that the groove for your dead bolt is deep enough for the bolt to fully extend. Your door isn’t deadlocked unless this is the case.
